At Your Service with Customer Service Training

There are many positive occurrences in healthcare that go unnoticed yet everyone always  hears about the negative experiences.   When we focus on finding the good, we will find it.  When we find it, acknowledge it and it will spread.

Shortly after an "Undercover Patient Assessment" followed by customer service training for the healthcare professional, I begin hearing those stories about the good things that are happening.  With training, employees and physicians are made aware of how things look through the patient's eyes.  They also become more aware of ways to set the stage for a positive working environment.

"Atta Girls and Atta Boys" are free to pass along and the benefits are great.

Whine or Shine

"Whine or Shine" ~ It's OUR choice.  I bet you know someone that will FIND something to whine about even on a bright and sunny day.  Those kind of people will rob the joy from OUR lives....however, we must first give them our permission.  I have a choice....I can whine or I can shine.   I've noticed that when I whine, I attract more "Whine Ohs" and when I shine.....I "Shine On".

"Training Wheels in Heels" will be "Shining" tomorrow ~ providing information, laughter and inspiration that will "Shine On"

It's YOUR day ~ have it YOUR WAY ~

HOME ~ A Poem Dedicated to my Mother who suffers from Alzheimer's

                       ~ Home ~

She looks at me with her soft blue eyes
It seems as if she is asking me why

I'm unsure of the place in her mind she is in
She's uncertain of how her day has been

Wherever she is, I pretend to be there
So I play right along and she knows I care

She smiles with grandchildren and the great grands
She thinks everything’s “new” over and over again

Like a wave in the ocean, fading out to the sea
Sometimes coming closer, sometimes farther from me

The Mother that held me tightly in her arms
Today I must protect her from all harm

I watch her as she walks back into her room
Making sure she gets there, I cannot assume

I know I will miss her when He takes her home some day
But thankful for the opportunity that I was given to say

"Thank you Mother for yours and Daddy's love
And for making sure I knew about Our Father up above"

The greatest gifts that parents can possibly give
Are to teach and to show their children the Christian way to live

I am so blessed to have the years that I've had
"I sure picked the bestest!" I would always say to Dad

She's packing up her things again, she's going back home
It's HER Mother she wants, so she begins to roam

The home she is longing for is that heavenly one
To be with her loved ones, God, The Father & The Son

In honor of Louise N. Price ~ My Mother who has Alzheimer’s

Anti - Bullying & Domestic Violence Awareness

In May, I was privileged to be the Emcee for two very special events.  The first was Purse Power ~ where celebrity purses were silently auctioned and designer purses were raffled.  Over $5000.00 was raised to bring "Rachel's Challenge" to our schools.  If you haven't viewed the video for "Rachel's Challenge" I would encourage you to do so.  She was the first victim in the Columbine shooting.   Kids especially need to know that we are there and that we care.  It is a difficult subject however having had a bully for 2 years in school, I have been there.  I find that it is always easier to relate to others that have been right where you are.  Please learn the signs, be there and show you care.

Which brings me to the other special event where I was honored to be the Emcee.  "Home Grown" ~ featuring local farmers raising local foods being used by local chefs.  What a winner!  This event raised over $20,000.00 with all proceeds going to "The Shelter" ~ raising awareness for domestic violence.  Did you know that one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime?  I was one.  Prevention and education about domestic violence needs to start early because girls and young women between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of intimate partner violence.  73% of domestic violence incidents go unreported.  Please be there and show you care.  Know the signs of domestic violence.  Don't be afraid to be a friend.

Also in May, it was such a pleasure to be the director of a beautiful wedding, the uniting of a gorgeous bride and her handsome groom.  How exciting it is to see life through the eyes of a new bride and groom.  A brand new beginning.....faces that glow with each smile.  Excitement was in the air as two wonderful people began their life together as one.   During the prayer, I couldn't help but notice that the birds had even joined in the happiness.  When we open our eyes, our ears and our hearts....we can then experience the love all around us and those who need us.

Wherever you are....be there and show you care.  Don't be afraid ~ be a friend.

In Joy,
Denise

The Phases & Faces of Females

I was honored to be the invited guest speaker through the Clover Chamber of Commerce for the Females in Business Luncheon in Clover, SC.   As females, we are mothers, daughters, wives, sisters, co-workers, bosses, senior toilet scrubber, chief yard keeper, car pooler, caregiver, sister in law, mother in law, housekeeper.....and so much more that we sometimes forget WHO we really are.  Wouldn't it be nice if we WERE the person that we PRETEND to be to everyone else?   We learned simple ways to:

  • upgrade our "software" (reconnect to the person we are meant to be)
  • protect our "hardware" (take care of US)
  • keep check of our "underware" at all times (what makes us do the things we do)
Comments:
"I needed this TODAY!"
"I am so glad that I made the time to come today! Your message hit me HARD!  I try to be everything to everyone except myself.  I will strive to do better"
"Great seminar!"
"The simplicity was just what we as women needed....bringing US into our own lives and accepting ourselves as who we are"
"Loved it!"
"You really helped me today.  I'm going through some difficult times, thank you so much!"
"A very good lesson! I needed that very much"
"Thank you for sharing your beautiful message with us."
"Great presentation, really hit HOME!"

"Never mind me, I'm just the patient"

With recent personal visits to hospitals & clinics....I have met many wonderful people.  There are those that truly care about each patient, treating them as if they were family members.  "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" ~ sound familiar?  Well, it seems that everyone gets a chance to be on that side of the fence at some point, either as a patient or with family members of their own.  I am thankful and very appreciative for those professionals that listen to each patient, seem truly concerned and keep the patient posted, calling back with reports, etc.  When you ARE the patient, it's very simple:  You will find that the things that cost the least ~ mean the most.   It all begins with Compassion ~ The Bigger "C"© (my book in progress)

Now, on the other hand.....it saddens me to see people in a profession that they dislike because it SHOWS! It is written all over their face.   Recently during my blood pressure check, I was attempting to ask a very simple question.  In fact, I attempted twice but was interrupted both times, I was not allowed to complete the question and of course, never received an answer.  The person offered no smile, no eye contact and did not want me to open my mouth prior to being wheeled back out the door (which was obviously her favorite part of the job).   After all, never mind me, I'm JUST THE PATIENT!

A smile cost nothing, it is actually a free face lift.   When you ARE a real patient and you see someone with a smile there to help you, you remember it well.  You want that person to take care of you throughout your visit.   Healthcare professionals have the ability to put many patient fears at ease with a simple smile and true compassion.

Nurse Bradley did that for me when I was 16 years old and facing many fears.  While alone and afraid, she  held my hand in that emergency room that Sunday night.  She was right where she needed to be....and so was I.  We were in good "Hands"   Thank you Nurse Bradley, I shall always remember you.   Thank you for "Making A Difference" in my life.

How will YOU make a difference?  How will your facility be remembered?   Please email denisepricethomas@gmail.com if you wish to share your stories ~
